Understanding the Principles of Emergent Curriculum
Wednesday, September 28, 2011
Emergent Curriculum has become increasingly popular in early learning settings over the past few years. Although there are many resources available, it can still seem confusing as it is more about a way of being with children, than a prescribed approach to teaching. There is often misguided thinking that Emergent Curriculum simply means following whatever the child wants to do. In actuality children’s ideas are an important source for curriculum but it is only one of many possibilities. During this workshop participants will be introduced to the different areas and basic principles that make up an Emergent Curriculum and support children’s intellectual, social and moral development.

Relationships as Core Curriculum:  Considering our Image of Children
Wednesday, October 26, 2011
As Early Learning Professionals we understand that forming strong healthy relationships with children is paramount to healthy brain development. Participants in this session will reflect on the powerful factors that influence our image and how our beliefs about children affect every decision we make in the classroom from how we design our curriculum, organize our environments, and form relationships with children and families.

Observation, Documentation and Interpretation
Wednesday, November 30, 2011
When we observe children closely and listen to their ideas, we begin to develop a greater understanding of what they know and how they perceive the world around them. Observing, documenting and interpreting children’s learning is among the most valuable skills a teacher can develop. It reveals the teaching and learning process for both children and Educators. It can help teachers make informed decisions, develop closer relationships with children, support authentic assessment, enable children to reflect on their own work and make learning visible in the classroom. During this workshop we will examine basic principles and consider a variety of approaches to documenting children’s work.

The Power of Two:  Emergent Curriculum in the Toddler Classroom
Wednesday, January 25, 2012
During this session participants will explore the principles of using an Emergent Curriculum approach with Toddlers. Together we will explore the dynamic and competent ways that young children engage their world.  We will consider how we might use our own power to support children’s lively minds and will use specific tools that will deepen our understanding of the child’s point of view.

The Role of the Environment
Wednesday, March 21, 2012
Within an Emergent Curriculum the environment is viewed as an additional teacher. Important considerations are made around the use and organization of space and materials. Children’s lives are reflected within the classroom and learning is visible. A classroom that uses an Emergent Curriculum is aesthetically beautiful, it fosters creativity and promotes wonder and curiosity in both children and adults. During this session participants will explore the concept of the environment as an additional teacher and discover innovative ways to inspire and support children’s learning through the use of space and materials.
